The project, being organised by a southern Sudanese-Australian group based in Brunswick, Melbourne, is to provide an education centre for adult and women’s education. The building project will incorporate school buildings, on site accommodation for students, outdoor facilities including sporting facilities, and small scale farming on which to teach agricultural practice. The Sudanese-Australian group require the assistance of an architect/urban designer to prepare a feasibility study and schematic masterplan which they can use to present to organisations to gain financial support for the project.

Bush Camp, Bunyip State Park

Architects for Peace Pro Bono Referral Service seeks expressions of interest from graduates or registered architects to provide architectural services for a bush camp adjacent to the Bunyip State Park. The prospective service provider (SP) can either do the project alone or be partnered with another SP (one architect is familiar with the project and is able to work on it if a partner can be found). The project is for Pathways Foundation, a harm minimisation programme for youth. They have been lent land on which they are currently building ecotoilets. They have requested assistance with Design research, conceptual design, construction documentation, consultant liaison for a bush kitchen, large covered gathering space, and storage shed. Materials would mainly be timber and adobe bricks. There are no services on site.

The budget is low (under $50,000) and most labour will be volunteer. The programme is not yet confirmed. All prospective Service Providers should be Architects for Peace members.

Please email your Expression of Interest to probono@architectsforpeace.org stating your name(s), availability, relevant experience, and whether you would like to partner with another practice.

This promises to be a rewarding project for a respected organisation.

Bird Hide at Westgate Park

siteplan.jpg                                  elevation.jpg

Architects for Peace is offering the opportunity to work on a bird hide project in the unique surroundings of Westgate Park. Friends of Westgate Park (FOWP) are a community based not-for-profit environmental group that has a nine year record of service in developing Westgate Park - a large inner-metropolitan park (within the City of Melbourne), managed by Parks Victoria, featuring lakes, wetlands and native vegetation. The park boasts an abundant birdlife with its frontage to the Yarra River, and extensive habitat improvement undertaken by the FOWP. The park is popular with bird observers but as yet there are no purpose built facilities to provide close viewing opportunities for these important park visitors. The FOWP hope to build a bird hide that would address this and provide an asset for park visitors, bird observers, school groups and other educational and scientific institutions.

Schematic designs have been prepared for the bird hide in consultation with bird observers and the FOWP. Input is sought from an architect to develop the plans in a way that is sensitive to the unique landscape. The project will be undertaken in two stages – a first stage for the purposes of approval from Parks Victoria, and a second stage where the drawings will be documented for tender.
